Friends in fine form as central Durban’s top football league enters its business end

2014-07-17 00:00

GREENWOOD Park Friends banged home a total of nine goals in their last two matches in the Durban Central Football Association (DCFA) Premier League.

Friends consolidated their position at the top of the league with a 4-3 win against Hearts, followed by a strong 5-1 thumping of the AmaZulu/Sharks.

Villa Park also had a solid week, picking up a win and a draw to get four points from the six on offer and Juventus — for so long the high flyers of the season — continued to stutter, breaking their losing streak with a 2-1 win against Albert Park and drawing 1-1 with defending league champions Newlands.

Stella were on the receiving end of a ‘Brazilian’, going down 8-3 to Stars, but credit to their never-say-die attitude in picking themselves up to beat Coronation 3-1.

Albert Park gleaned no points with losses to Riverside (4-3) and Juventus, while Westville Old Boys, undergoing a difficult transition after the departure of coach Mike Lunzmann, still cannot get the rub of the green.

John Collier is the new man in charge and the lads are playing well, but lack the killer instinct to make the results go their way. They lost 4-2 to Villa Park and 1-0 to Riverside.

Newlands drew both their matches.

Interesting times lie ahead as the league enters its business end with key matches in the next few weeks.

Friends lead the way in the standings with 37 points from 17 matches, with Juventus second on 34 points with a game in hand. Sando (30), Newlands (27) and Riverside (26) close out the top five.

At the bottom, Westville have nine points, Stars 10 and Villa Park 15.

Saturday sees the second round of the Fury Ford FA Cup, with fixtures being played at various venues around Durban.
