From the horse’s mouth: Superb day at Ulwazi Farm

2008-03-06 00:00

Ulwazi Farm, near Hilton, held a superb cross- country day last Sunday in aid of the Pietermaritzburg branch of Riding for the Disabled.

Winchester Farming, under the guidance of Yvette Taylor, produced three excellent tracks with impressive attention to detail on the jumps, including wooden sculptured crocodiles languishing in reeds next to the water jump.

It was also heartening to see Francie Weston making a welcome return to competitive riding after 14 years of being the back-up person for her daughter’s competitive career.

The local branch of Riding for the Disabled is staffed by willing and knowledgeable volunteers. The group also cares for some quality horses and ponies. They have exclusive use of these horses, and riding and being around the equines has proved to have the most beneficial effects on many of these mentally and physically challenged children and adults.

All activities are free and many welfare and specialist organisations benefit from the regular organised rides where physiotherapists, teachers and other specialists are normally on hand to see the benefits to their patients.

The Minetts were pioneers of competitive eventing in South Africa and they have all been the most popular supporters and ambassadors for the sport over many years.
