Fuel prices down after World Cup

2010-06-29 00:00

WHILE it is likely that fuel prices will soon be lowered as a result of an over-recovery on petrol and diesel, motorists will have to wait an extra week to experience the benefits at filling stations.

The petrol price is expected to decrease by about 18 cents a litre while the wholesale price of diesel could decline by about 14 cents a litre in July.

A spokesperson for the Minerals and Energy Department, Bheki Khumalo, told The Witness yesterday that the implementation of the fuel price changes will take place on Wednesday, July 14, instead of a week earlir because of the Fifa World Cup.

Fuel price changes usually come into effect on the first Wednesday of each month.

An over-recovery on a fuel product essentially means that fuel consumers are paying too much for petrol or diesel on that day.

Khumalo said the minister recently gave permission for fuel prices to remain unchanged until July 14 in order to provide price stability for foreign tourists visiting the country during the football tournament.

The decision will not prejudice motorists as the extra week will be allowed for during the July accounting period.
