Fuel station robbers run out of petrol near scene

2015-02-03 00:00

THREE robbers’ escape was stymied when they ran out of petrol and were spotted by one of their victims as they scrambled to refuel their getaway car.

The hapless heist men held up security guard Michael Kambule (28) at his post at the Woodburn petrol station in central Pietermaritzburg yesterday morning.

Kambule was accosted by the three men as he left work and they robbed him of his possessions — a plastic bag containing his work shirt and cellphone.

Kambule wrote down the vehicle registration number on his hand and rushed back to his work base to report the incident.

Having reported the matter, the guard left his base and as he walked onto the street, noticed the very same car used in the robbery. And just to confirm, he checked his hand — there, written down, were the same details as appeared on the car he was looking at.

Superior Security spokesperson Pierre Bruwer said that Kambule had rushed to his colleagues for aid.

“The vehicle, a white Chevrolet Spark with a broken back window, was being filled with petrol from a can. Kambule rushed again to base for back-up,” he said.

In a scuffle with a troop of security guards, the three men were incapacitated with pepper spray before they were arrested.

A relieved but tired Kambule, still waiting to go home after his long shift, said: “I feel happy that they were caught. And tomorrow [today] I can get my things back from the police.”
