Funeral: 'Swastika gone too soon'

2010-03-25 00:00

IT was a difficult time for the Hansraj family yesterday as they parted with their daughter Swastika at her funeral.

Swatstika’s father Anand said yesterday evening his daughter left behind many good memories, both as a daughter and as a friend.

“It is not easy to accept that my daughter is gone — gone too soon. She is leaving behind a huge gap which cannot be easily filled as she had her own ways of dealing with things,” he said.

The 21-year-old Swastika Hansraj was found drowned in her vehicle on Tuesday morning after a long search by the police and family.

She went missing after attending a pre-wedding function in Gandhi Road on Saturday evening.

It is believed she dropped off a friend in Northdale, and was not seen since.

She was apparently swept off the low-level bridge in Woodhouse Road after the Msunduzi River had risen following heavy rain in the midlands on Saturday afternoon.

Her vehicle was spotted by a pedestrian in the river on Tuesday morning, 500 m downstream from the bridge.

The pedestrian raised the alarm and divers, police and paramedics worked tirelessly to retrieve her body from the car.
