GHS, St Anne’s take spoils

TWO of the 10 regional Spar aQuellé Schoolgirls’ Hockey Tournaments took place on Saturday, with Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High (GHS) and St Anne’s coming out winners in their sections.

PMB North was played at UKZN and hosted by Carter High. St Anne’s won, followed by The Wykeham Collegiate (TWC), Voortrekker, Howick High, Carter, Grace College and Heritage Academy. St Anne’s and TWC were level on points, but St Anne’s had a better goal difference.

Epworth hosted PMB Central, with GHS the winners, followed by Epworth, Treverton, Maritzburg Christian School, Alexandra and Linpark.

Anna-Marie Maartens and Jarryd Christie were chosen as the most promising umpires.

The tournaments were used as part of the selection process for the uMgungundlovu District U16 and U18 teams.

The district teams will take part in the inter-district tournament to be held in PMB on April 26 and 27, when the KZN Inland provincial teams will be named.

The 10 regional tournaments give nearly 100 schools’ first teams in the province an opportunity to participate. The winners of the two PMB tournaments will come up against the winning schools from the North Coast, Durban North, Durban Central, Durban South, Pinetown and Umvoti tournaments in the 10-team Spar aQuellé Championship, to be played at St Mary’s and Thomas More College in Kloof on July 20.

“We are extremely fortunate to have a wonderful sponsor in Spar KZN,” said KZN Schools’ Hockey chairperson Charmaine Koekemoer.

“Tournaments such as this provide a wonderful opportunity for schools to finalise their teams for the season as well as for schools that don’t usually play against each other to do so.”

Meanwhile, GHS beat St Anne’s in the Parklane SuperSpar final, a separate competition held within the two tournaments, in which the winners from each tournament play each other in the final. Excellent hockey was exhibited in the final, considering it is so early in the season.

GHS scored first when Cayley Higgs attacked along the baseline and fed her sister, Tarryn, who made no mistake. Just a few minutes before the final whistle, SA age-group player Kate Polkinghorne of St Anne’s finished off a well-executed penalty corner variation to draw the final in regulation time.

The teams battled it out in an exciting penalty shootout that ended all-square after the first round. It was captain Chiree Coetzee who won the match for GHS in the sudden-death phase.

The tournament has a Facebook page — SPAR aQuellé School Girls’ Hockey Tournament and a Twitter account — @SPARGirlsHockey.

Spectators and players are encouraged to visit the page and check out all the action from the regionals.
