GHS at the pinnacle of KZN schools’ hockey

THE Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS) first team ended third in the Spar KZN Regional Finals.

GHS won the Parkland Superspar A-League at the end of last term and the weekend’s placing maintains this momentum to keep the team at the pinnacle of KZN Inland/Midlands schools’ hockey. The Greenfields synthetic surface at GHS has been a huge help, as it has at most successful hockey schools. In the past GHS had to book slots at the AB Jackson and due to cost constraints time on the field were kept to a minimum.

“This has helped with the younger players especially as some of them have not had enough Astro exposure at primary school,” says first team coach and head of sport at GHS, Taryn de Winnaar.

This year is De Winnaar’s ninth season with the Girls’ High first team.

“I started with the fifth and sixth teams, then the second and U16A teams, and eventually the first team.

“Coaching is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. I am a GHS Old Girl and still very passionate about my school.”

The SA international indoor hockey goalkeeper says seeing the players’ progress in their careers is wonderful but seeing them exceed their own expectations and doing things that they didn’t think were possible are the real highlights. “So much in sport prepares people for other life experiences and I firmly believe that we, as coaches and teachers, have a responsibility to equip the players with skills that will benefit them in the future.”

Indoor hockey is also very popular at GHS and it contributes to the overall development of the players.

“But I also believe that our off-season training is crucial and it has made a massive difference to the girls that haven’t had enough time on the Astro at primary school level.”
