GHS win in a pulsating final

2012-03-20 00:00

THE Parklane SuperSpar pre-season Schoolgirls’ Hockey Championship went the way of Pietermaritzburg Girl’s High School (GHS) after a closely contested final against The Wykeham Collegiate (TWC).

The St John’s synthetic turf was the neutral venue for the final, which GHS won 2-0 through well-taken goals by Tarryn Higgs and Sam Brown.

A total of 14 schoolgirl first teams competed for the title. The four schools battling it out to play in the finals were TWC, Epworth, GHS and St Anne’s.

The final was a pulsating affair which saw GHS lead 2-0 at half-time. Higgs opened the scoring when she beat the keeper on the left post and popped the ball into the back of the net. Brown’s goal came from a left-slip penalty corner variation that was the GHS trump card.
