Gambler stole R860 000

2008-06-08 00:00

A compulsive gambler who lost R860 000 that he stole from his employer was jailed for an effective four years in a plea bargain agreement in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Friday.

Former teacher Logananthan Govender (54) of Pietermaritzburg was sentenced to eight years’ jail, four suspended, by regional magistrate Paul Abelman after admitting to the crimes.

Mitigating factors for Govender were that he was divorced in 2005 and was depressed after the death of a son in an accident.

He started drinking heavily and gambling to overcome his grief, losing all the money he stole from Katope Natal.

He has no job and has no assets or possessions of value. He admitted that from December 2007 to March this year he transferred amounts earmarked for the company’s creditors into his account.

He had access to an internet bank account and would make a list of the suppliers to be paid. The names of the creditors would be loaded on an internet banking system and the list would be submitted for authorisation.

Govender would enter his bank account details in place of some of the creditors’ bank accounts and the money would be transferred into his account.
