Game mocks Zuma and puts fun into SA politics

2014-04-24 00:00

A FREE game for cellphones, Flappy Zuma, which was released by the South African company Go Life Mobile, looks set to put fun back into local politics.

The programmers deny that the game is based on any specific person, but the main character, Flappy Zuma, has a bald head, wears spectacles, has many wives and owns an estate with only the best finishes.

Uygar Yasar, owner of Go Life Mobile, said Flappy Zuma is similar to the mobile game Flappy Bird, but with a South African twist. Flappy Zuma is free from Apple’s AppStore and is currently in the top 10 free games for smart phones in SA.

The aim of the game is to steer Flappy Zuma past obstacles, including shower heads, to get to the next level. When the character collides with an obstacle, the words “Eish” or “Yoh” appears on the screen. When Flappy Zuma gets to the next level, he says things like, “I did not use taxpayers’ money”.

One player stated on the AppStore webpage that he really enjoyed colliding Flappy Zuma into obstacles.

Yasar said he did not expect any negative reaction to the game because it does not refer directly to a real person.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said he was not aware of the game and did not want to comment.

Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj did not react to queries.
