Game reserve manager killed

JOHANNESBURG — The manager of a game reserve has become the 11th person killed in the crime-ridden Muldersdrift area near Johannesburg since last September.

A gang of robbers killed German-born Paul Schulte (56) outside his house at the Heia Safari Ranch on Tuesday evening.

His former father-in-law, Franz Richter (80), was murdered by his wife at the reserve, which he founded in the Cradle of Humankind, in 2008.

Richter’s daughter, Gaby Burgmer, the current owner of the ranch, said her daughter, Bianca Rogers, found Schulte dying in a pool of blood.

“Now my daughter has to go through the same thing I did when my father was murdered,” said Burgmer. “We don’t have words left to describe our pain.”

Schulte was the second person killed in the area this week. On Monday evening, a security guard was killed, possibly by the same gang, in nearby Nooitgedacht.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said security guard Sydney Ndata (21) and a colleague were confronted outside their guard hut and robbed of their weapons. Ndata was shot dead when one of the guards tried to activiate the alarm.

Anchen Dreyer, Democratic Alliance MP for Mogale City, said Muldersdrift and its surroundings were at risk of becoming the “grave of humankind”. Crime in the area was far higher than in nearby police precincts, she said.

For example, at least 327 cases were opened at Muldersdrift in March last year, compared with 56 in Magaliesburg, 68 in Tarlton and 28 in Hekpoort.
