‘Gang’ four on trial for murder

2011-02-08 00:00

FOUR men are appearing in the high court in Pietermaritzburg in connection with what is alleged to be a gang-related murder of a teenage girl at Mpophomeni near Howick on September 12, 2009.

The victim, 15-year-old Lerato Nxele, sustained 37 injuries when she was attacked with knives and bush knives, according to post-mortem findings.

The four accused are Thabani Dlamini (24) Mbongeni Dlamini (23), Lindelani Ndingi (20) and Sphamandla Mbandlwa (21).

They all pleaded not guilty before Judge Isaac Madondo and assessors.

The state’s indictment alleges that two rival gangs — the 26s and the 28s — had been operating in the Mpophomeni area and that the accused are members of the 26s.

It is alleged that prior to the murder, a member of the 26s was killed in the girl’s presence.

The 28s allegedly carried out the killing and the accused suspected that Nxele had betrayed their gang member.

It is alleged that Nxele and a friend were seen in the area by the four accused, who decided to execute her.

They allegedly accosted Nxele, dragged her to a secluded place and repeatedly stabbed her before throwing her body into a stream at Mpophomeni where it was found the next day.
