Gang raids piggery: Farmer horrified by cruel slaughter

2011-11-30 00:00

A PIG farmer near Shelly Beach was “really upset” by the cruel way thieves stabbed and bludgeoned his animals to death at the weekend.

Eight pigs were butchered by a gang of unknown men.

Owner Fred Swart said he disturbed the perpetrators. They had packed the slain animals into sacks and tried to carry them out of the property.

“I spotted them carrying the sacks and shouted,” he said.

The men dropped the sacks and started to run.

“I ran after them but since my house is quite a distance away from the piggery, the men got away.”

It appears the men used an assegai and dagger to repeatedly stab the pigs and a brick was used to bludgeon them.

“I’m really upset at the way these animals were killed. It was an act of cruelty,” said Swart.

He said it was evident that the pigs died horribly, since there were many stab wounds on the carcasses.

Swart, who has owned the farm for 25 years, said it was not the first time an incident such as this had occurred.

“This has happened in the past, but it has been some time since anyone tried to steal from the farm.”

Swart said the carcasses were handed over to a local restaurant. He opened a case of theft with the police.
