Gangsters convicted of murder

2012-06-29 00:00

TWO members of the notorious “26” gang from Mphophomeni will be sentenced today for the murder of a 15-year-old girl three years ago.

Thabani Dlamini (24) and Mbongeni Dlamini (23) were convicted yesterday of the murder of Lerato Nxele in September 2009. Two other accused, Lindelani Ndingi (20) and Sphamandla Mbandlwa (21), were acquitted.

Handing down judgment, Judge Isaac Madondo said that even though alcohol played a role in the attack, the accused knew what they were doing.

Nxele was with her friend when she was attacked. Thabani, her boyfriend, suspected that she was in another relationship with a member of the rival “28” gang, who he believed had led the “28” gang to murder one of his “26” gang members.

Nxele’s uncle, Phindo Mazibuko, tried to intervene when she was attacked, but Thabani threatened him with a bush knife. They assaulted the girl with a bush knife and panga and dragged her along the road to a secluded place. They repeatedly stabbed her before throwing her body into a stream at Mpophomeni.

State advocate Zukiswa Diyase asked the court to sentence them to life imprisonment.
