Garbage: Allendale raises a stink

2011-04-29 00:00

A HUGE mound of garbage has been left festering at the end of Salford Road in Allendale. The heap of garbage has been lying there for over three weeks, say residents and business owners in the street.

Ranitha Mothivelal, whose front steps end almost at the pile of refuse, says that she has approached the municipality several times in the last two weeks.

She has spoken to both the health department and waste management, only to conclude that nothing is to be done soon.

When she phones the helpline, she says, her calls are often cut off or go unanswered.

“We are paying for this service,” said an outraged business owner in the street, referring to the rates paid to remove refuse. He added that he has seen the refuse removal trucks come past the pile of garbage, make a U-turn and drive past again.

Another business owner said the community has asked for a skip to be placed in the street, to which, he says, the municipality agreed. However, three years later, they are still waiting.

Municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said, “Our waste compactors are now up and running. We should not be having garbage lying around uncollected.”

He added that he has taken the matter up with waste management, and it “promised to remove the garbage by this weekend”. He added that the municipality was in the process of establishing a call centre to deal with service delivery complaints.
