Gasa murder suspect remanded in cells for a week

THE man who police claim to be their prime suspect in the murder of Umhlanga businessman Nhlanhla Gasa will spend at least another week behind bars.

Mbulelo Arthur Ntlauzana (25) appeared in the Durban Regional Court yesterday, a day after pointing out crime scene details to investigators.

Ntlauzana’s case was postponed to April 23 to give him and his legal aid attorney, Hycenth Mlotshwa, time to consult.

There was no plea from Ntlauzana, who faces charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and malicious injury to property.

He was arrested on Saturday night at a house in Groutville, kwaDukuza.

Speculation of a confession sparked by police comments that Ntlauzana was co-operating with the investigation petered out by midday when magistrate Anand Maharaj postponed proceedings.

Ntlauzana, wearing an orange golf shirt and beige pants, will be remanded in the Durban North police cells.

Gasa’s son, Andile, and a few supporters attended the hearing and left with the investigating team.

Gasa’s body was found in the Tugela River nearly three weeks ago.

He had been stabbed and his luxury Jaguar car was found burnt nearby.

The 63-year-old businessman was allegedly murdered in his upmarket Umhlanga home and his body then dumped in the river.

Gasa moved in elite business circles and headed the boards of Absa Group and Umgeni Water.

He also benefited from an arms deal spin-off venture called Hivex, which sought to sell a controversial Russian Aids therapy in South Africa.
