Gathering set to attract over 1?500

TODAY is World Aids day, and the Ugu District Municipality has organised a mass gathering that will take place at the Imfundeni sports grounds in Harding today to create awareness around the pandemic.

KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Arts and Culture and a political champion of the Ugu District, Weziwe Thusi, will be at the meeting.

It is expected that more than 1 500 people will attend the meeting which, according to the HOD for Ugu District, Chris Hlabisa, will seek to encourage people to engage with government in an attempt to find solutions to bring about a reduction in HIV infections.

“We have invited NGOs, religious and traditional leaders and absolutely everyone to attend the meeting,” he said.

Hlabisa conceded that the HIV infection rate in the Ugu District is among the worst in the province.

He said the message that needs to be sent out from today’s proceedings is a simple one: “Those who already have it [HIV] must not spread it further and those who don’t have it must make sure they don’t get it.”
