Gauteng: SA post’s Contingency plan to get mail moving

2013-03-06 00:00

THE Post Office said it has a contingency plan to get mail moving, following a strike by postal workers in Gauteng.

“Contingency plans implemented by the SA Post Office have made some headway into mail sorting in Pretoria and Johannesburg,” said the group executive of mail business at the Post Office, Janras Kotsi.

He said he was expecting mail deliveries to have begun in the Tshwane and Johannesburg areas, “thanks to processing done over the weekend”.

Pietermaritzburg residents have also been complaining that they have not been receiving their mail on time.

Kotsi said the Post Office has put in place extensive measures to make the workplace safe and to reduce the likelihood of intimidation.

Kotsi said the Post Office issued workers with an ultimatum to return to work on Thursday last week. “Workers may be dismissed if they fail to return to work. The principle of no work, no pay applies to striking workers,” he added. The strike began on Valentine’s Day over allegations that the SA Post Office owes workers pension money.

However, Kotsi said the staff at Post Office outlets were not striking.
