Gayle shines in T20 win

2015-01-10 00:00

A RECORD half-century from Chris Gayle gave the West Indies a four-wicket victory over South Africa in the first T20 International at Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town last night.

Gayle needed just 17 balls to reach his 50, beating the previous best of 27 balls at Newlands as the West Indies reached 168 for six with four balls to spare in reply to the South Africans total of 165 for four after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

The left-handed opening Gayle smashed five boundaries and eight sixes, which is also a record at Newlands, before being well-caught by Morné van Wyk behind the stumps off the bowling of Imran Tahir (3-28) for 77 off only 31 balls.

Marlon Samuels faced 32 balls for his 41 before being caught by Rilee Rossouw at short mid-wicket off Tahir.

Rossouw top-scored for the hosts with an unbeaten 51, which came off 40 balls with five boundaries, while the captain, Faf du Plessis, hit five fours and two maximums in his 20-ball innings of 38 before hitting a full toss from Andre Russell (1-43) straight up into the air to be caught by Darren Sammy.
