Gear up for Umhlanga Carnival

2013-12-05 00:00

THIS year, the Umhlanga Summer Carnival is almost a month-long affair, culminating in a family-friendly street party on December 21. On this day, Chartwell Drive will be closed off to cars.

The year-end fun-filled carnival will be providing day and evening activities, and is hosted by Umhlanga Tourism.

The events include the Umhlanga Lizzard Nature Valley Surf Festival this weekend.

Surfers, spectators and beach-goers will be treated to free tastings of delicious Haagen Dazs ice-cream, and will also get free granola bars to munch on with a chance to win over R50 000 in prizes at the surf festival.

KwaZulu-Natal Central Surfing chairperson Paul Izzard is thrilled with the entries so far, and said it is always one of the best weekends on the surf calendar because families get the chance to enjoy one of South Africa’s prime beaches.

Peter Rose, chairperson of Umhlanga Tourism, said the carnival attracts tourists and locals alike.

“In Umhlanga, you would find residents living here for over 10 years but do not go to the beach; this is a way to get them out their houses to appreciate what the area has to offer,” he said.

The street party will take place from 6 pm until midnight on December 21.

“There will be entertainers, fire jugglers, mascots and clowns, and there will be stalls selling festive fare; gift ideas; plenty of al-fresco meal options and live music,” Rose said.

The carnival is hosted in association with eThekwini Municipality.
