Gentle stray has new coat ready for a new home

2014-11-26 00:00

DESPERATE for a loving home, Pipe was brought into the SPCA as a stray after her owners discarded her because she suffered severe mange.

SPCA vet Debbie Cornish said the dog arrived at the SPCA covered with external parasites, such as fleas and ticks, which caused hair loss, and itchy, sickening skin that was very painful to her.

“She was almost completely bald, with infected, hardened, broken skin.

“After a five-week treatment, which included weekly injections and medicated antibiotic shampoo, her coating started growing back and we were able to see how she looked before her illness,” she said.

SPCA kennell manager Ronnie Yeoman described Pipe as a gentle, sweet dog.

“She’s only about nine months old but has already led a horrible life. She’s desperate for a loving home and she mixes very well with other dogs,” she said.

Pipe has been unlucky in being adopted since she was treated because she’s less active than the other dogs, said Yeoman.

Cornish provided prevention advice for people with dogs that suffer from demodectic illness:

• Owners must ensure that their dogs have a healthy immune system;

• Feed the pet good-quality dog food;

• Make sure that you deworm the dog every three to four months; and

• Use flea and tick control every month to avoid itchiness.
