German outshines Mulaudzi in Glasgow

2010-02-02 00:00

SOUTH Africa’s Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Khotso Mokoena have some work to do ahead of the World Indoor Championships in March.

World 800 m champion Mulaudzi finished second to German Robin Schembera at Saturday’s Aviva International Indoor meeting in Glasgow. The German took the tape in 1:48,55 to Mulaudzi’s 1:49,45.

Mokoena dropped out of the long jump event before the start.

The Mr Price team had a clean sweep of the podium at Sunday’s annual Sparksport 32 km race. Samuel Pengaza was the outright victor, finishing in an impressive 1:50:57, leaving club mate Michael Ngaseke to cross the line just over three minutes adrift. Vusi Mngando, who was a further 600 m behind, ensured the Mr Price team took top honours.

Miya Lawrie outran all the juniors to take the tape in 2:18:04, followed by Debbie Eaton from Collegians Club, Pietermaritzburg, and Kristy Scott in third place.

KwaZulu-Natal’s top short-distance athlete, Thubalethu Phaku, finished the single-lap 16 km race in 50 minutes and 31 seconds, ahead of Zimbabweans Professor Mollen and Richard Nene. Janene Carey recorded 1:07:31 on the line, with Maureen Slack in second place and Gertje Strachan in third.

The annual Pietermaritzburg vs Highway Ladies’ time trial takes place at the Pietermaritzburg Bowling Club at 6 pm tomorrow. Refreshments will be provided at the finish. For further details, call Alen Hattingh on 083 440 3135.
