Get tough on taxis, say readers

2011-10-03 00:00

THE Witness Facebook page drew many responses yesterday after we asked what should be done to stop taxi drivers and others from dangerous overtaking to jump the queue. Comments have been edited.

Akanyang Merementsi — Jailed & have their licences revoked indefinitely.

Laurence Webber — Fine them, have their taxi licence taken away so they cant kill any more innocent lives

Mbuso Madondo — The taxis issue is difficult, because its a numbers game business. Meaning, its all about who get to the rank first or how many trips can the taxi do per day in order for the owner and the driver to make good profit. This makes it very difficult for anyone to tell the drivers not to speed or do any stupid driving mistake.

Yashen Naik — Increase visible policing. Seeing traffic police on the roads during peak hours is a rare occurrence. Issue stiff penalties to reckless taxi drivers. Taxi drivers found guilty of reckless and negligent driving should be banned from driving public transport vehicles … The employers of reckless and negligent taxi drivers should be fined.

Ytania Bam — Taxi drivers have the worst jobs ever — they get yelled at by drivers and passengers all day long, they have to pull over every five seconds because the passengers refuse to gather at a central “taxi stop” and they have to do their work at top speed so they can make stax of cash for their bosses.

Charmaine Maharaj — Stop traffic cops from “striking” and instead of issuing parking fines, they should be posted at every corner doing something useful like giving tickets to ALL reckless drivers! Taxi drivers are very RECKLESS … my mum travels daily in them, and I fear for her life!

Leyya Reddy — Can’t do much. We are living in South Africa, where taking a life doesn’t mean much.

Keith Branch — Enforce the rules BUT harshly. Jail no bail and get them into court asap. Don’t let it drag out.

Claude Roberts — I blame the traffic cops. They are too soft on the taxi drivers or too scared of them. I have seen the cops overlooking taxi drivers when they do wrong. So obviously they can do what they please and get away with it.

Neville Coleman — Take their drivers licences away for a year and fine the taxi owner.

Samantha Govender — Whether it be the taxi drivers or our everyday commuters, we all have to realise one thing … We living in a culture of fast cars, fast foods and a fast life.
