Getting connected: Canadian tourist recovers iPhone, thanks to beachgoer’s lucky find

2013-01-02 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Phone calls and e-mails between South Africa and Canada saw a tourist’s lost cellphone restored to her in the southern Cape holiday town of Waenhuiskrans.

Grace Shaw, a student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, was on holiday with her South African-born boyfriend, James Starke.

The pair were staying with his grandfather, legendary Springbok flank, James Starke snr.

Shaw left her Apple iPhone on a bench overlooking the sea after a walk at the weekend.

Capetonian Chavonne Butler of Bishop Lavis, who was staying in the town’s caravan park with her family, found the phone.

In order to track down the owner, she phoned the last number dialled, and got Shaw’s sister, Emma, in Vancouver.

Emma asked her to keep the phone, and sent her an e-mail address where Grace could be reached. She sent a message to Grace, and also looked through the photos on the phone, one of which showed people on the Waenhuiskrans beach with a German Shepherd dog.

Two of Chavonne’s aunts later met Starke snr on the beach with his German Shepherd Pippa, and asked him if he knew Grace, and so the contact was made that saw her expensive phone returned.
