Getting musically involved

2010-03-11 00:00

THE music workshop at Girls’ High School (GHS) in Pietermaritzburg is celebrating its 15th year and its goal is to encourage more people to develop musical skills.

Established in 1995 by Helen Vermaak, who is well known for her contribution to music as a soloist, choir mistress, musical director, accompanist and matric music examiner, workshop participants range in age from preschool to adults.

Each year, students participate in the South African Society of Music Teachers Pietermaritzburg Eisteddfod, concerts, and music examinations of the Associated Board of   the   Royal  Schools  of  Music,  Trinity College and the University of South Africa (Unisa).

The music workshop at GHS is run by a voluntary association of experienced private music teachers offering tuition in piano, guitar, violin, bass, drums, singing, flute and theory of music.

Highlights of the year include quarterly in-house concerts, a jam where all students are able to experience the fun of playing together with other musicians with a full professional sound setup, and an annual Christmas concert.

They also regularly get involved in concerts and events at schools and churches in the community.

If you would like to get involved or would like to know more about these workshops, phone Helen Vermaak at 083 488 0188.
