Ghana save SA in Youth Olympics

2010-02-27 00:00

THE South African Youth Olympics boys’ hockey team gave a sigh of relief when Ghana beat Egypt 4-1 at East London’s Kat Leisure Park to ensure they go through to Saturday’s final on goal difference.

SA had been brought down to earth with a bump in their previous outing when traditional rivals Egypt beat them 2-1. SA’s subsequent 3-1 defeat of Kenya, thanks to goals from Ross Gonsalves, Chad Cairncross and the prolific Grant Glutz gave them a slot in the final against Ghana due to a slender goal difference of one over Egypt.

This leaves SA still on course to qualify through Africa for the first ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore later this year.

In their previous encounter the Ghana boys thrashed Zimbabwe 11-0 and, if their 3-2 loss to SA in the round-robin phase is anything to go by, the final should be another thriller.

Earlier in the week, SA had beaten Zimbabwe 5-0 and Namibia 6-1.

The unbeaten SA girls’ team will meet Namibia in their final after beating Zimbabwe 7-0 with goals by Stephanie Baxter (2), Jacinta Jubb (2), Tiffany Jones and Adrienne le Vatte.
