Gift of Givers donates wool and blankets to SPCA

2009-07-09 00:00

THE appeal through the media by the SPCA for donations of wool and blankets was answered by the Gift of the Givers Foundation (GoG), who supplied some 70 blankets and four bales of wool yesterday.

This was a big step as GoG is usually a human welfare-orientated organisation, said Salim Sayed of GoG.

He expressed how glad they were to help, while Maureen Vida, spokeswoman for the SPCA, went on to say how grateful and delighted those at the kennels were with the large donation.

The wool will be used by volunteers, many in old age homes, to knit small blankets and jackets for the dogs and cats of the shelter.

The winter chill means these items are well received by the animals, but playfulness and washing results in the jackets, especially, getting worn down easily. “This is why this donation will be an amazing help to everyone at the kennels,” said Vida.

She said they would welcome more volunteers to help with the knitting. Anyone interested in helping can call them at 033 386 9267/8/9.

The large amount of wool means any extra animal jackets could be sold and the profits go towards other expenses of the kennels.

The donation comes less than a week away from Nelson Mandela’s birthday, when the spirit of volunteerism will be celebrated. Mandela is an honorary patron of the SPCA.
