Gift of the Givers helps Mozambique

2013-01-29 00:00

GIFT of the Givers and the SA Defence Force (SANDF) are preparing 100 tons of emergency supplies for Mozambique.

Floods have left about 150 000 Mozambicans displaced, according to the latest UN report. The number is expected to increase substantially.

“In some areas whole villages have been submerged,” said Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of the Pietermaritzburg-based Gift of the Givers.

Boats, divers, aquatic rescue personnel, paramedics and medical teams have been offered in the event the water level rises again.

Sooliman said the response of the SANDF to Gift of the Givers’ request and offer of assistance was swift, positive and encouraging. He said warehouses were being sourced and feeding centres were set up yesterday as the first response team was on its way there.

People wanting to bring in supplies can do so at any of the organisation’s offices or warehouses. Cash contributions can be made to Gift of the Givers, Standard Bank, Pietermaritzburg, account number 052 278 611, branch code 057 525, reference “Mozambique”. E-mail or fax the deposit slip with details.
