Gift of the givers work with karate-do to aid Japan

2011-03-18 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg-based Gift of the Givers Foundation has put its relief mission to Japan on hold until further notice, because of uncertainty about the nuclear radiation situation.

However, they are appealing for contributions to increase the aid they have already sent.

Medical co-ordinator Ayesha Sooliman said the organisation is liaising with the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF), the largest shotokan karate institution in the world.

“We have sent $30 000 (R209 400) to SKIF’s account and they’ve already bought items for the Japanese relief on our behalf,” Sooliman said.

Sooliman said people have been calling in for information on how they can make a contribution. “We have professionals who are keen to assist. Another man called our offices and said he doesn’t have much but he doesn’t mind going there to help pick up rubble,” Sooliman added.

To donate towards the Japan disaster relief go to www.giftofthegivers.org or call 033 345 0163 or 080 078 6911.
