Girl (14) drowns in school pool

2009-11-12 00:00

A SWIMMING session at Umhlanga College in the Durban North area ended in shock yesterday afternoon when a 14-year-old girl, whose name was not released by the time of going to press, drowned in the school’s swimming pool.

Netcare911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said the events leading to the drowning were sketchy.

“What transpired remains speculative and whether the girl was swimming alone or as part of a group is unknown” Wicks said.

He said the girl was pulled from the water by school staff members who started CPR.

When paramedics arrived they found the teachers with the girl by the poolside.

She was taken to Umhlanga Hospital where she was declared dead.

In another incident, a woman is in a serious but stable condition after a near-drowning at a beach close to the Suncoast Casino, Durban, yesterday afternoon.

It is believed that the woman had been swimming in the surf and was caught in a strong rip tide.

She was taken to St Augustine’s Hospital.
