Girl (6) found dead under bed

POLICE were called to the Swapo B informal settlement in the early hours of Saturday morning when the body of a missing child was discovered.

She was identified as Leta Sindisiwe Ranketsi (6), and was found covered with a blanket and lying under a bed in a house in the area.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the girl had bruises on her neck, face and thighs showing that she may have been raped, assaulted and strangled to death.

Her aunt sounded the alarm earlier in the day when the girl who was playing outside with other children in the morning was nowhere to be found at 2 pm.

She immediately informed Leta’s mother. Members of the family then searched for Leta and after a six-hour search produced no results, police were contacted.

Police also conducted a search and at about midnight SAPS members received a call from the family informing them of the gruesome discovery of Leta. A man was arrested at the scene.

It is alleged her body was discovered by a man who alerted the family.

The family members together with community members allegedly apprehended the man and assaulted him before contacting the police. He sustained bruises to his face.

It is believed that while Leta was playing outside she was lured into a house where she was allegedly raped, assaulted and strangled to death before the suspect shoved her body under a bed in the house.

The suspect, a minor, was expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday to face charges of rape and murder.
