Girl diagnosed with leukaemia receives dream iPad

2013-09-23 00:00

WHEN Lauren Booth saw that Chezlyn Kemraj (11) dreamed of having her own iPad, she immediately set out to make Chezlyn’s dream come true.

Booth, who works for the ICT company Intergr8, became aware of Chezlyn’s dream after she contacted the Reach For A Dream (RFAD) foundation. Chezlyn was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in May this year. “At school, Chezlyn’s favourite subject is computers and technology, no wonder she wanted an iPad,” said Booth.

Booth flew down from Johannesburg at the beginning of the month to meet Denise Towell from RFAD to set up Chezlyn’s dream.

Instead of just presenting the iPad, Booth and Towell set up a treasure hunt for Chezlyn at Butterflies for Africa. She got a Chris Brown CD (he is her favourite artist) and a Twister board game. Toward the end, she was presented with the iPad and covers.

“My experience with Chezlyn is one that I will cherish forever. Her eyes are filled with hope, her heart is full of dreams and her spirit is that of a fighter’s. It was amazing how much joy the iPad gave her. Integr8 is honoured to have sponsored her dream and I am fortunate enough to have shared in her joy on the day amongst the butterflies and birds at Butterflies for Africa,” said Booth.

Aveen Kemraj, Chezlyn’s father, said the smile on his daughter’s face when she received her iPad was indescribable. “She has had a hard time since being diagnosed. At first her kidneys could not cope with the treatment, then she developed diabetes. The cancer caused her to have seizures, which resulted in slight brain damage. Despite this, she is a very strong girl.”

Chezlyn is currently receiving her third high dosage of chemotherapy. On Wednesday, she celebrated her 11th birthday and received three cakes: from her parents, the hospital and Reach For A Dream. Kemraj was grateful to RFAD and Intergr8 for making his daughter’s wish come true.
