Girl from children’s home goes missing after visiting her family in Thornville

2011-09-07 00:00

POLICE have appealed for help in tracing 11-year-old Michaela Kennedy van Dam, who was last seen at the Salvation Army Joseph Baynes Children’s Home on August 26.

She was picked up by her father for her usual weekend visit to her family home in Thornville, which was later found vacant.

Said police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan, “The child was placed in the safe house in 2009 because a court order of abuse and neglect was issued, but we cannot reveal the details of the court order,”

The order allows weekend visits home. Jeevan said cases of a missing person and contravention of a court order have been opened.

Children’s home social worker Paula Robinson said they are worried about the mental toll the ordeal may be taking on the child.

“Michaela was settled and happy here and it is worrying to think of what her life on the run is doing to her. She is missing out on school and it is unlikely that she is enrolled in a new school or we would have picked it up. She must be very scared and confused and we need her back to a place where she feels safe.”

Anyone with information about Michaela should call Warrant Officer Morgan Munsami at 033 845 7724 or 084 400 9945.
