Girl ‘wiped out images of shooting’

2013-08-27 00:00

THE six-year-old girl who allegedly shot her friend with her grandfather’s revolver on Saturday had already placed the events in the “delete box” of her brain.

The little girl from Johannesburg told a counsellor shortly after the fatal shooting on Saturday afternoon that she had placed the picture of the tragedy in her “delete box”.

The accident happened at a private game reserve near Bela-Bela.

Sibongile Moima (6), the daughter of Piet Moima who is the foreman on the game reserve, died after she was shot in the face while the children were playing in the farm house.

The girl’s name and that of the grandparents she was visiting are being withheld to protect the girl’s identity.

The grandmother said the two girls had been best friends for years.

Her grandfather had appeared in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court for the negligent handling of a firearm. He was so traumatised that he tried to hang himself on Sunday.

He had paid R500 bail and must appear in court again in September. He did not want to talk to the media.

Police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said the director of public prosecutions will determine whether the grandfather will be charged with murder or culpable homicide.

It is still a mystery how the girls got hold of the revolver and how the shot went off. Sibongile will be buried on Saturday.
