Girls' hands immersed in hot cooking oil

BLOEMFONTEIN — Two schoolgirls who allegedly stole cheese curls from a shop, were apparently punished by having their hands immersed in hot cooking oil.

The 12-year-olds allegedly stole the snacks from a tuckshop in the Mandela Square suburb of Prieska on Monday night.

The shop owner caught them, and allegedly immersed their hands in hot cooking oil. One was allegedly also kicked in the ribs.

Police spokeswoman Captain Cherelle Ehlers said the girls were found with burn wounds in a house later that night and taken to hospital.

A 32-year-old suspect was arrested on a charge of assault with the intention to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Deon Pieterse, headmaster of the Prieska Primary School, where one of the girls is a pupil, said this “brutal act” is a symptom of the culture of violence in the community of Prieska.

“I went to visit them in hospital. The scars will be visible for the rest of their lives. One day they will have to work with those disfigured hands,” he said.
