‘Give women a say’

2011-12-03 00:00

“THERE is a Miss World, a Miss Universe, why not a Miss Climate Change?” asked His Holiness Shri Shri 1008 Soham Baba during his press briefing at COP 17 in Durban, speaking about women and climate change.

Soham Baba, founder of the Netherlands-based Soham Baba Mission, is one of the most colourful personalities at COP17. He has appeared in voluminous robes either of bright yellow or fluorescent blue.

He said, “We always talk about Mother Nature. We never say Father Nature. Mother is a very powerful personality. And we need a powerful person to solve this big problem of climate change.”

In order to do this, he said, spiritual powers are needed, not just “materialistic strategies”.

Soham Baba said women have a key role to play, but this development is being frustrated. “Our world leaders must give a chance to the women of our society to introduce projects and strategies.”

Social and spiritual decisions are made by women, but political and economic decisions are made by men, he said.

“Women decide whether to go to the orchestra or the cinema, but do not get the proper amount of money to run the household.”

Similarly, political decisions are made by men while women are told how to vote.

“I have noticed this over the decades during my travels.”

If people do not develop their spiritual potential the problem of climate change will not be solved, he added.
