Glad to help, but don’t charge us

2010-05-17 00:00

WE are happy to help out by carting away our own rubbish and cleaning verges or streets, but then don’t charge us for services not being delivered by the municipality.

That was the reaction of many people who responded to the call for help from the Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize, for residents of Msunduzi to pitch in and help clean up the capital.

The Witness’s switchboard was flooded with calls on Friday morning as residents phoned in either to support the idea of active assistance by citizens, or slam the initiative as a ridiculous idea.

Others e-mailed letters suggesting constructive ways residents could help restore the city to cleanliness or offering their services. Many simply wanted to let off steam about the poor state of the city.

While many residents are clearly not willing to embrace the Friends of the City initiative, others enthused about the possibility that it may well work and expressed their desires to help restore Pietermaritzburg to its former glory.

Either way, a dialogue has been opened.
