Glenwood, Westville favourites in openers

THE first official Saturday of schools’ cricket for the new season sees only four matches being played as most schools are wrapping up their football season. But there will be plenty of interest in those games.

The only match that is a repeat of the first term is at Maritzburg College, who will be hosting Glenwood. The Durban side won the first encounter by 13 runs.

Andile Phehlukwayo was the essential difference between the two sides. First he helped add 48 for the eighth wicket and then captured four wickets to prevent College reaching their target.

College on their home ground will be determined to reverse the result, but they will have to play better cricket than they did in the T20 matches at St Davids last weekend. There, the frailty of the middle order was exposed, and if this does not improve, Glenwood could well win again.

The advantage of playing at home and of having played a 50-over game and four 20/20 games will help College, as Glenwood have not yet had a competitive game this season. It should be an intriguing contest.

Westville was rained out in their match against Northwood during the first term, and with home ground advantage they could well be favourites in the first game for either team this season. Westville had greater consistency, which made them one of the better teams early in the year. Northwood promised in some games, but struggled to deliver.

Hilton and DHS will be meeting for the first time this year and with neither side having made many waves in the first term, it should be a tight contest. Hilton were also involved in four T20 matches last weekend, but they did not play well. With a more mature side, they will have more confidence than their Durban opposition.

The only other game is at Clifton, where they welcome Kearsney. Clifton have not yet established themselves as a top-level side, but unless they play the top sides, they never will. It will not be easy for Clifton, as Kearsney were one of the top KZN sides in the first term. After their tour to England during July, they will be determined to carry some of the experience gained to maximum advantage this term.

FIXTURES: Maritzburg College vs Glenwood; Westville vs Northwood; Hilton vs DHS; Clifton vs Kearsney
