Glenwood brings in top new coach

2014-01-28 00:00

THERE are changes aplenty when it comes to rugby at Glenwood High School this year.

New director of rugby Shawn van Rensburg brings an impressive CV to the position.

Van Rensburg was head of rugby at Voortrekker High School in Pietermaritzburg from 2011 to 2013, also filling the position of sports co-ordinator. From 2012 to 2013 he was head coach of the UKZN Varsity Rugby Club and last year, coached the UKZN Impi Varsity Shield side.

He has been involved in coaching since 2007, at club, school and varsity level, including a stint with Vail Rugby Club in Colorado in the U.S.

He has also played the game at different levels during a 10-year period, the highlights being the first pupil from Andries Pretorius School to be selected for Craven Week in 1987; Werda School 1st XV captain from 1991 to 1993; captain of the Natal U20 team in 1994; Natal U21 captain and Player of the Year in 1995; Sharks squad and Wildebeest 1999; selected for Welsh squad under Graham Henry in 1999/00; Heineken Cup 1999/00 to 2003/04; Welsh Rugby League squad 2006; captain Natal Duikers 2007; and from 2010, played for the Springbok Legends and SA Rhinos League on invitation.

With his vast experience, Van Rensburg should prove a vital asset to Glenwood and keep the “Green Machine” one of the country’s most respected outfits on the rugby field.
