Glenwood centenary hockey festival this weekend

2010-03-19 00:00

GLENWOOD High School in Durban is celebrating its centenary this year, and the first big sporting occasion is the holding of a centenary hockey festival, which is to be held this weekend.

Some of the schools with which Glenwood have had a long sporting association have been invited to the festival, which begins this afternoon and goes through to Sunday. The other KZN schools are Maritzburg College, Kearsney, Michaelhouse and Westville. The schools from outside the province are Grey College, St Johns, St Albans and Pretoria BHS. As there is an uneven number of schools, DHS will be playing one game against Glenwood on Sunday.

The centenary festival has affected the normal hockey fixtures, which follow the rugby fixtures. Some of the fixtures that were scheduled to be played tomorrow have been played during the week.

Michaelhouse will be playing their match against Hilton this afternoon and because they will not be playing in the Festival until tomorrow, they will play only the three games and not four as with the other schools.

The Michaelhouse clash with rivals Hilton is always a tight contest. Michaelhouse has just played the one match, whereas Hilton has played four games. This perhaps will give Hilton an advantage, but at this early stage the outcome is difficult to forecast.

Maritzburg College won a tight game against Kearsney (2-1) on Wednesday.

Westville will be playing their fixture against home side Northwood tomorrow morning. It is expected that the hockey at Northwood will improve with the appointment of Fabian Gregory, who has been involved with the SA Women’s team, to head their Hockey Academy and coach the First XI. As Northwood lost against Glenwood last week they will want to turn things around as quickly as possible.

The other game that occurs tomorrow will be between hosts DHS and St Charles, to be played on the Riverside pitch. Both sides have played one game where St Charles drew with Hilton and DHS was beaten by College. This will have dented their confidence, and St Charles could well pull off a win.
