Glenwood end season by beating St Charles

2013-11-05 00:00

WITH the rain staying away on Saturday, Glenwood were able to play their final cricket match of the season, hosting St Charles on Dixon’s field.

Hero of the day for Glenwood in their four-wicket win was SA U19 player Andile Phehlukwayo, who took 3-24 and then compiled an undefeated 85 as his team got home in the penultimate over.

St Charles won the toss and batted first, reaching 199-9 after 50 overs.

A third-wicket stand of 58 was the highlight of the batting as Glenwood’s bowlers broke through at vital times, preventing any solid recovery by the visitors.

Mark Ortmann (43) and Ben Philpott (52) were the best with the willow, while Phehlukwayo was assisted by spinner Smanga Nhlebela (3-31) in the bowling department.

Starting slowly, Glenwood reached 41-2 after 10 overs and it was left to Phehlukwayo to see them home. He was involved in a fourth-wicket partnership of 90 with Mickey Hay (27) after Gareth Wissing had added a quick 28 earlier.

Phehlukwayo’s knock included four boundaries and four sixes. Glenwood will be relying on more of the same from him as the team continue in the T20 series for the remainder of the season. Glenwood are currently unbeaten in this year’s competition and have high expectations of lifting the trophy.

Scores in brief

St Charles 199 (Philpott 52, Ortmann 43; Phehlukwayo 3/24, Nhlebela 3/31) Glenwood 200-6 (Phehlukwayo 85*). Glenwood won by four wickets.
