Glenwood underscore dominance, College pick up the pace to win

2011-05-31 00:00

REPORTS were received from only two of the three hockey matches that took place on Saturday.

DURBAN HIGH SCHOOL 0 Glenwood 5

Glenwood has become one of the major hockey schools in the province this season and on Saturday they dominated the game against Durban High School on the picturesque Riverside pitch.

Glenwood, with most of the possession, rarely allowed DHS into their circle and most of the play was in the DHS half.

The final score could have been even bigger if Richard Curtis, the KZN Coastal goalkeeper, had not made some telling saves.

Glenwood scored five goals to underscore their dominance and make other schools sit up and take notice.

No goals were scored in a frustrating first half as College dominated both field position and possession. They were also disallowed a seemingly legitimate goal from a penalty corner.

College picked up the pace in the second half and four goals were scored.

Nic Wanliss scored the first two — both after good build-ups from the back.

MJ Murray put College 3-0 up when he finished off after some enterprising play by Grant Glutz.

Glutz scored the final goal with a backhand pile driver into the roof of the goal giving College a deserved 4-0 win.

The final of the Night Hockey League between Kearsney College and Glenwood was played in a great spirit last week and was an excellent advertisement for schoolboy hockey.

When the final whistle was blown, the full-time score was 2-2.

The players kept the small crowd who had braved the weather on their toes, with both keepers making telling saves during the shoot-out. It finally boiled down to players not taking their chances and Glenwood ran out winners 3-2, when Kearsney were unable to convert their last stroke.
