Gmail spoof becomes reality

2011-04-05 00:00

WHAT started as an April Fool prank by Google could turn into a reality. “Gmail Motion”, the supposed new feature allowing users to use body gestures to compose and send e-mails in Gmail — was broadcast tongue-in-cheek on YouTube — showing a webcam translating movements into actions on the Gmail webpage.

However, the folks from the Institute of Creative Technologies say the April Fool joke is real, and have jokingly dubbed the technology SLOOW — Software Library Optimising Obligatory Waving. It uses a Microsoft Kinect camera to control Gmail.

The same team used the technology to play the computer game World of Warcraft, using only body motions last year.

Amazingly enough, it works pretty much as Google intended: you can type text into Gmail by using body gestures, and send an email by “licking” the stamp and slapping it onto an envelope.
