Gogo (109) to finally get electricity

2013-07-18 00:00

GOGO Mantombi Zuma (109) might be seeing the light soon, in the real sense!

She celebrated her special birthday two weeks ago without ever experiencing the convenience of electricity in her home.

But since The Witness ran her story earlier this month, government departments have pitched in to change her circumstances.

Zuma, of kwaDinababuko outside Hillcrest, recently told The Witness that at her age life was difficult without electricity in her RDP house.

Since the report on her plight, various people from different government institutions, including the Department of Energy, have promised to help her get connected to the electricity grid in the area.

Zuma resides at house number 2374.

However, Ashwin Syme, the chief of staff in the deputy minister of energy’s office, told The Witness that an investigation revealed that Zuma’s identity document registered her house number as 2375, the house next door.

“According to eThekwini records, her ID number has a meter number that is allocated to house No. 2375,” Syme said.

It transpired that there was a swop of houses at some point.

The eThekwini electricity department is communicating with the Department of Housing to find out who the original beneficiary of house No. 2374 is, and if that person was allocated a meter number.

“The old lady will be connected once that information is gathered, to avoid duplication of beneficiaries,” Syme said in an e-mail.

“I was told this process will take approximately a week.”

Yesterday area councillor Sithembiso Mchunu said there was a mix-up during the registration process for the RDP houses in the area, and that Zuma’s issue is receiving attention.

“Investigation by various roleplayers is under way,” she confirmed.
