Golf: Gowrie hosts amateur tournament

2009-01-14 00:00

The strokeplay event will take place over 36 holes to be played today and tomorrow, with play starting at 11.30 am today and at 9.30 am tomorrow.

Ten of the country’s top 20 amateurs are competing, with third-ranked Adrian Ford from Western Province the leading player. Ford recently won the Freddie Tait Cup at the SA Open for being the leading amateur.

Respective fourth- and fifth-ranked players, Dean O’Reily and Jake Redman, are also in the field, while last year’s runner-up Steven Swanepoel, a former Michaelhouse boy now based in Western Province, is back.

Flying the KZN flag will be Pietermaritzburg champion Christiaan van der Merwe and Jared Harvey from Royal Durban. Local lad Danny Greene, Gowrie’s current club champion, will look to use his intimate course knowledge to the best of his ability.

A further addition to the field is Ben Hatchwell from Canada, whose father Tony was PMB’s leading golfer in the 1960s and ’70s and was a nine-time club champion at Victoria Country Club.
