Golf: Greene on his way in Africa Open

2010-01-08 00:00

MARITZBURG’S Sunshine Tour rookie Daniel Greene made a solid start to his professional career, as he posted a one-under 72 at the Africa Open in East London yesterday.

Greene, who played a starring role in Kwazulu-Natal’s amateur IPT triumph last year has had a busy festive season, as he secured his Tour card with an excellent week at the notorious Tour school, before topping the charts at this week’s pre-qualifier.

“The wind was pumping during the qualifier, but I just told myself that anything under par would get me in,” the lanky Gowrie Farm professional said last night.

Having finished in the top eight at Tour school, Greene is exempt to play in all the Sunshine Tour events, but had to qualify for the more elite Africa Open.

But after his excellent showing at the qualifier, Greene has been handed a sponsor’s invite for next week’s Joburg Open at Kensington.

“I am looking at these next few months as a learning curve, and I am just really excited to be playing my first tournament as a professional,” the promising golfer said after yesterday’s tough first round in East London.

Greene’s emergence means Maritzburg now has three young guns in the Tour ranks, with Neil Schietekat hoping to maintain his excellent start to Tour life.

The former Maritzburg Golf Club star shot 69 yesterday, and has told The Witness that he was feeling in fine fettle going into this week.

The third local plying his trade in the paid ranks is Colin Nel, who failed to qualify for this week’s Africa Open but will be hoping to seal his spot for next week’s Joburg Open.
