Golf: St John’s host international schools tournament

2012-08-08 00:00

ST JOHN’S COLLEGE will host the ninth annual FNB Private Clients International Schools’ Golf Tournament at the Sun City Resort from today.

The main objectives of the tournament are to raise the profile of golf at school level and to afford South African schools the opportunity of competing in an international arena.

The tournament offers the country’s top golf-playing schools the opportunity to compete at the highest level on two of SA’s top golf courses.

This year’s field is made up of 30 Southern African teams, of which five are from KZN, one from Zimbabwe and a UK team from Whitgift College, who will be making their debut appearance.

The KZN representatives are Clifton, Hilton, Maritzburg College, Michaelhouse and Westville.

The tournament will be played over four days, using the two Gary Player-designed golf courses.

The competition comprises teams of four U18 boys who all play off scratch handicaps.

It is expected that there will be representatives from various organisations who scout for talented young golfers, with a view to recruiting them for American universities.
