Good all-round performance from Westville sinks Northwood

2013-10-08 00:00

A SLICK performance in the field from Westville Boys’ High School saw them knock up an eight-wicket win against Northwood at Westville on Saturday.

Winning the toss, Westville captain Luke Schlemmer, keen to unleash his bowlers on the Northwood batsmen, asked the visitors to take first strike.

All went to plan as strike bowler Jesse Smit had both openers back in the pavilion with the score on 17. Northwood never recovered, losing frequent wickets, and only a ninth-wicket partnership of 27 added some respect to the total. In hindsight, 100 all out in 26.4 overs was never going to be enough.

Schlemmer, recently selected as vice-captain of the KZN U19 team, was the chief destroyer, finishing with 3-15 from 4.4 overs.

Superb catches and a run-out from Bruce Kerr, aiming at one stump, never allowed Northwood to settle.

Schlemmer was again involved with a blinder at first slip to remove his opposite number Dale van der Merwe, a dangerous batsman whose big hitting abilities could have changed the game.

Westville stuttered early on in their innings, losing Jason Oakes early before Kerr (37), a KZN U17 player, and Nick Pentz (KZN U19) put on 85 runs to virtually seal the contest. Pentz finished undefeated on 48.

Kerr was out late in the chase, allowing Schlemmer to hit the winning runs and round off a solid day’s work for himself as Westville reached 102-2 in 20.5 overs.
