Good and bad news as Sharks gear up for Bulls

2009-07-21 00:00

THE Sharks meagre backline resources could be stretched to the limit if flyhalf Guy Cronjé is suspended for an alleged spear tackle during Friday night’s Currie Cup match against Boland at King’s Park.

The slightly-built 19-year-old Sharks flyhalf, who “tipped” a tall Boland lock, has been cited and will appear before a disciplinary hearing today.

Fears that scrumhalf Rory Kockott would also be cited for throwing a punch proved unfounded.

The Sharks face the Blue Bulls at King’s Park on Friday and the loss of Cronjé would be a major blow with Monty Dumond the likely replacement.

It was hoped that Argentinean flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez would be in Durban early this week and available to face the Bulls, but there was still no news yesterday that the paperwork had been completed and, with the Sharks wrapping up their main preparations today, it is now unlikely he will be selected.

On the injury front, there was good news with the shoulder injuries sustained by flank Jean Deysel and hooker Craig Burden both cleared to face the Bulls.

The Bulls have problems of their own. With Adi Jacobs nursing a groin strain, the Bulls have lost centre Wynand Olivier to the Springbok squad. Olivier yesterday joined the Boks and it is uncertain whether he will be released to face the Sharks if Jacobs is cleared to play. Bulls scrumhalf Heine Adams picked up an injury against WP and will face a fitness test later in the week.

The Sharks match against the Bulls kicks off at 6 pm on Friday.
