Good effort but poor finishing see Glenwood waterpolo boys finish ninth

2014-03-11 00:00

GLENWOOD High School’s U15A waterpolo players were at the Parktown tournament this past weekend, one of 20 schools shooting for gold.

Prior to the event, the Glenwood side had made their goal a top-eight finish and, when the water had calmed, they occupied ninth spot overall.

Head of aquatics at Glenwood, Steve la Marque, was impressed by the training and effort from the boys prior to the tournament and he was happy to see the growth and belief shown by the players.

Just before departing, Connor Allan, a key player in the team on the right of the pool, pulled out, leaving Brendon Mitchell to fill his role, a job performed with aplomb.

First up for the lads were King Edward VII School (Kes) and watching the game, it looked as though the Durban side had left their skills on the bus. Far too many scoring opportunities went begging, a pattern that was to become costly as the tournament went on.

Scoring from only one of 12 shots against Kes, and one from 16 against Clifton, gave a clear indication of where it was going wrong and with such low scoring percentages, it was always going to be an uphill battle.

In both matches, Glenwood could have taken the spoils, as at the opposite end of the pool the defence was solid.

Although disappointed with their finish, La Marque took solace in knowing the boys had gained valuable experience and knew where to tighten up on their game.

Slade du Randt and Gabriel Stopford were solid for Glenwood, with Stopford the leading goal scorer.

Glenwood’s U14A waterpolo team played in the Jeppe tournament and enjoyed a vast improvement on last year’s 17th place finish to secure sixth overall in a field of 20 teams.

Playing six games, the Glenwood team won three and lost three, and were the top KZN school at the event.
